If you’ve been caught up in a crypto scam and are looking for help on what to do next, then you’ve come to the right place.

Amidst the anger and upset that usually follows the realisation that you’ve been caught up in a scam, there’ll be a desire to take action to try to recover your stolen funds and bring the scammers to justice.

The good news is that there are a few things you can do!

Recovering crypto or seeking compensation

Let’s be straight – getting your crypto back from scammers or your money back from the bank is not going to be easy.

However, there are several courses of action open to you which will certainly improve your chances. They include:

1. Contact the authorities and report the scam. Getting your name in the system might mean you get some or all of your cash back if law enforcement manages to catch the fraudsters.
2. Hire a specialist crypto recovery company to trace the transactions involved in the scam and pursue action on your behalf with banks and crypto exchanges in conjunction with the authorities (ask us for a recommendation).
3. Ask your bank for compensation. You can either do this yourself or use a specialist firm of solicitors to carry out the work for you.

Remember, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get your money back or secure compensation.

To improve your chances, you’ll need to:

• Keep a record of all the transactions involved.
• Note down any wallet address you’ve sent crypto to.
• Detail conversation with the scammers, including social media exchanges.

Will I be able to get my crypto back from the scammers?

Police investigations can be long and drawn out and even then there’s no guarantee that anyone will be arrested or charged.

Likewise with probes by recovery companies and their digital forensic investigators.

If you expect to get your stolen funds back overnight you’ll be disappointed.

Prepare to wait several months for the process to run its course and understand that there will not necessarily be a positive result at the end.

Quick guide to spotting a crypto scam

If you’re looking to put money into a cryptocurrency investment, there are certain things you can check:

• Is the return on offer exceptionally high?
• Did someone on social media tell you about the investment?
• Are you being asked to convert cash to crypto before investing?
• Have you met someone online who is pressuring you to invest?
• Is the platform/app very new (you can check the domain name age using free tools)?
• Do you have an investment manager who’s offering to set up your account and crypto wallet for you?
