Dogecoin is more well-known than Ethereum in 2022 among adults in the US, a new survey has revealed.

Despite the meme coin beginning life as a joke, it has rapidly risen in popularity thanks in part to support from billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

The findings were revealed in a survey of 2,001 US adults which asked which cryptocurrencies they had heard of out of eight options.

They were:

  • Bitcoin
  • Dogecoin
  • Ether
  • Litecoin
  • Tether
  • XRP (Ripple)
  • None
  • Other (please specify)

Unsurprisingly Bitcoin (BTC) is by far the most popular form of cryptocurrency, with almost three-quarters of the adult population of the U.S. being familiar with it.

The second most well-known crypto is Dogecoin (DOGE), with 1 in 5 respondents saying they had heard of this popular altcoin.

This was closely followed by Ethereum (ETH), with 1 in 6 of those surveyed stating they were aware of the coin.

As part of the research, Bybit also analysed millions of online searches related to cryptocurrencies.

The analysis found that Dogecoin is the most well-known and perhaps the most sought-after form of crypto at the moment, with more monthly online searches being made worldwide for Dogecoin than any other altcoin.

  • The cryptocurrency statistics revealed that every month worldwide, a staggering 2,800,000 online searches are conducted for the term ‘Dogecoin’.
  • This is then followed by the term ‘Ethereum’, which is searched for approximately 2,100,000 times per month worldwide.
  • Cardano and XRP were the next most searched for coins by US adults.

Bybit’s Edwin Lau says: “Given Dogecoin’s user-friendly nature and device compatibility, it’s unsurprising that this form of cryptocurrency is well-known.

“Also, being a meme coin – and being publicly supported by the likes of Tesla founder Elon Musk – we would expect it to be searched for regularly online, too.

“However what is surprising is that more people have heard of Dogecoin than other, more widely traded coins, such as Ether and Tether.

“There’s no doubt that Dogecoin shows some really promising potential. It’ll be interesting to see in the future just how far this altcoin goes and whether or not its popularity in terms of trading will catch up with that of its online search volumes and the like.

“If the last year and a half has taught us anything about this coin – it’s that it’s one to watch. Since the start of 2021, Dogecoin’s value has increased by more than 14,000% and is expected to reach an impressive $25.28 by the end of 2030.

“So be sure to keep an eye out. This coin started out as somewhat of a joke, but as Mr Musk famously put it ‘fate loves irony’.”
