So you want to get your hands on some digital gold but don’t have the cash to do so?

There are several competition websites that offer Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and NFTs as prizes.

There’s no guarantee you’ll scoop free cryptocurrency in a competition, but if you’re in it you may win it!

So here’s my list of the top free crypto competitions, together with some info about other ways of getting free bitcoin.

BOTB

Perhaps better known for its car competitions, BOTB (or Best of The Best) has branched out into crypto.

The platform now offers regular Bitcoin prizes of up to £20,000 in crypto, with entry costing just 70p.

All you need to do to enter is answer a simple question and you’re placed in the crypto prize draw.

At the time of writing the win Bitcoin competitions were part of BOTB’s Midweek Competitions, rather than the main Sunday draw.

Each week BOTB gives away a car to one lucky winner, along with a host of other prizes. Vehicle marques include Lamborghini, Land Rover and Tesla.

The site also runs lifestyle competitions where people can win cash prizes, watches, computers and other desirable items.

BOTB is a completely legit company and has been running competitions for more than 20 years, giving away some £52 million in prizes during that time.

Lucky Block

Lucky Block is a competitions and rewards platform that offers crypto and NFTs among other prizes.

At the time of writing users could enter to win up to $1 million in Bitcoin, a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, or a host of other prizes including a Lamborghini or a luxury property.

Entering the competitions is a little different from traditional prize sites. It involves buying and holding an NFT from a collection which then grants you entry at a future date.

When a collection sells out holders are automatically entered into the draw and a winner is chosen.

However, even if you don’t win a prize, you’ll earn crypto rewards in the form of a percentage of the rewards pool for as long as you hold your NFT.

The platform uses blockchain technology to ensure all competitions are fair and open.

It also runs on the $LBLOCK token which operates on the Ethereum blockchain. The token has seen a significant price increase since launching.

Ad-hoc competitions offering crypto prizes

Aside from regular crypto prize sites above, there are many ad-hoc crypto competitions run each year by a wide variety of organisations around the globe.

Here are a few examples:

Southampton FC

In 2022 Southampton Football Club ran a competition offering fans the chance to win a whole Bitcoin by searching for a series of clues around the club’s hometown.

QR codes were strategically placed and had to be collected before participants were tasked with solving a blockchain-based puzzle.

Eventually, a shortlist of ten finalists were drawn up, with a single winner chosen during a match at St Mary’s, the club’s home.

JOE

JOE, the social media publisher and news website, has previously offered readers the chance to win £1,000 worth of Bitcoin through simple giveaways.

Binance

Binance, one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, has in the past offered users the chance to win a whole Bitcoin.

The company offered the prize in a simple giveaway known as the Bitcoin Button.

All you had to do to enter was click a button at the right time to walk away with a whole Bitcoin, with other prizes such as NFTs on offer as well.

Sunshine Golf Tour

Golfers in Africa’s major Sunshine Tour tournament were offered Bitcoin as prize money during the 2022 competition.

Crypto platform Luno offered up the crypto after becoming the tour’s main sponsor.

The top prize winner could swing their way to a pot of 500,000 Rand ($27,500 at the time of writing) worth of BTC.

The winner also secured entry to two other major competitions, namely the United States Open and the British Open.

StarCraft 2

It’s a bit old this one, but way back in 2011 a StarCraft 2 tournament saw prizes of 25 Bitcoins a pop handed out to the runners-up.

At one point in 2021 this would have made them millionaires, and could well do again if they’ve still got their coins.

Sports is becoming the home of crypto competitions

As you can see, crypto competitions come in all different shapes so you’ll need to keep hunting the web to find the best offers.

Sports in particular is an area that is increasingly attracting crypto sponsorship and is predicted to grow exponentially over the coming years.

This can only mean that more prizes will be offered in Bitcoin and crypto.

Of course, not everyone can compete in golfing tournaments or other professional sports, but there are plenty of other competitions that you may be eligible for.

The best free Bitcoin trading competitions and crypto giveaways

There are plenty of other ways of scooping free crypto so don’t be disheartened if you’re not a chess grandmaster!

Binance runs regular trading competitions where you can win free Bitcoin and other crypto.

You’ll obviously need to sign up for an account first and make some trades, but there’s some top prizes on offer for the winners.

Crypto.com, another large crypto exchange offers similar regular trading competitions, as do many other crypto platforms.

In fact, you’ll find numerous trading promotions in the cryptosphere if you’re prepared to invest some time and money trading crypto.

Other ways to get free Bitcoins

If you can’t find a competition that pays out in Bitcoin, there are plenty of other ways to get your hands on some free Bitcoin and crypto.

They include:

• Play-to-earn games that pay in crypto – there are hundreds to choose from.
• Completing surveys that pay out in Bitcoin – Cointiply is a very popular site.
• Staking and yield farming to earn a passive income.
• Depositing on crypto interest earning websites such as Nexo.
• Using Bitcoin faucets for tiny free payouts of BTC – Freebitco.in is a great example of a successful legit faucet.
• Earning crypto through gig economy work on sites such as Fiverr.

Final word

Just a reminder that while competition payouts in the UK are usually tax free, if you earn free Bitcoin in other ways you’ll need to square things with HMRC.

For example, if you’re a regular trader or miner you’ll need to consider Income Tax and National Insurance.

However, if you’ve simply got some crypto and HODLed it and made a profit when you sell, it’ll be Capital Gains Tax you’ll need to think about.
