BITMAIN is the world’s largest manufacturer of specialist cryptocurrency mining computers, known as ASICs.

The Chinese company is probably most well-known for its Antminer range of Application-Specific Integrate Circuit (ASIC) servers used in mining a range of digital currencies, most notably Bitcoin (BTC).

The firm, which is headquartered in Beijing and has offices around the world, makes its own bespoke chips for its Antminer mining rigs which are sold to both individuals and large-scale mining farms.

It makes dedicated hardware for mining a variety of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Dogecoin, Dash and Zcash.

Mining is the process involved in the consensus mechanism of adding new transactions to a blockchain and earning mining rewards for doing so.

What is an ASIC crypto miner?

An ASIC miner is a computer that has been specifically designed to mine digital currency.

The chipset is optimised to compute just a single function or set of related functions meaning they can only be used for cryptocurrency.

Miners are usually manufactured with a specific cryptocurrency in mind, for example Bitcoin, and are optimised for that token.

What’s the difference between an ASIC miner and GPU mining?

The main difference between an ASIC miner and a GPU miner is that an ASIC miner uses a chip specifically designed to solve the complex algorithms involved in crypto mining, while GPUs are primarily designed for other purposes in mind.

ASIC miners are designed specifically for mining targeted coins and thus have a smaller and more compact form factor compared to a GPU mining rig.

While both types of miners have their pros and cons, ASIC miners tend to be much more powerful and efficient than GPU miners.

GPUs tend to consume more power than ASICs, and ASICs are generally more energy efficient.

However, GPUs can be used to mine a wide range of altcoins making them more versatile for home use, even though mining Bitcoin at home is no longer possible.

What’s the difference between an ASIC miner and CPU mining?

With CPU mining, the central processing unit of a computer is used to mine a wide range of cryptos, rather than a crypto-specific ASIC machine.

CPUs are not as efficient as ASICs or GPUs, and the process can ultimately lead to hardware damage.

However, CPUs can be used to mining a broad range of digital tokens, although profitably is an issue depending on the cost of electricity in the user’s area.
