October 8 marked an important date for IFAs in the UK.

It was when the Financial Conduct Authority lifted the ban on crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs).

This means that retail investors can now buy cETNs and, for the time being anyway, hold them within an investment ISA to shield any gains from tax.

HMRC has said that from April 2026 crypto ETNs will need to be held within an Innovative Finance ISA (IFISA), although they may be brought back under the investment ISA umbrella at a later date.

At the same time as this milestone in crypto acceptance in the UK, new figures show that 40% of those with £5,000 or more to invest are considering crypto and would be more likely to take their plunge if their financial adviser or bank offered it. This is especially true of the younger generation.
